CONSERVATION PROGRAMS

The Conservation Programs Division is dedicated to providing Oklahoma’s 84 conservation districts with the resources and assistance they need to protect our state’s soil and water. These efforts can be divided into two main program areas: flood control and locally led cost-share.

Dedicated to protecting Oklahoma’s upstream flood control dams and reducing flooding our Flood Control Programs assist conservation districts with the construction of upstream dams, as well as the operation and maintenance of existing dams.

Locally led cost-share program

Authorized by the Oklahoma Legislature in 1998, the Oklahoma Cost-Share Program allocates funds to conservation districts to help landowners implement conservation practices on their land to reduce soil erosion and improve water quality

flood control rehabilitation

Oklahoma has constructed 2,107 upstream flood control dams in 64 counties. Local watershed project sponsors (conservation districts) constructed the dams with assistance from the USDA Watershed Program. The Watershed Program is administered by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) who provides technical and financial assistance to project sponsors.
